Scid or Chessbase Light are two of your options! Why not Scid 4.0, the new beta? You will have to get your own updates if you want the latest games, everything you need for that is available in the weekly updates from TWIC, where would chessplayers be without their The Week In Chess! I am planning on doing this one day, I have collected all those The Week In Chess files but never built a database from it. ♠ An up to date database of your own will be much faster. I don't think they updated the software since Nicbase times. You'll find a handy 'get TWIC' on the help menu and other little useful changes. It is now based on Chessbase 10 instead of Chessbase 9. ♠ The search on New In Chess is even magnitudes slower I suspect so not recommended. Check it out Chessbase has released a new version of Chessbase Light. The Java engine takes a long time to start up on my overloaded computer so maybe this will not work, I can't say. Used to have a similar online database as Chessbase and they claim it is up to date, but the site is for a large part filled with online casino adverts. It will give a much faster response though. ♠ ChessBase Light has a built in demo database but it is much smaller and not recent games. The page says "Service Unavailable" so it seems Chessbase are aware of the problem.
